Kanda is the first exorcist Allen met when he arrived at Headquarters, although a misunderstanding caused them to have a bad start to their relationship... Not that he's the easiest person to get along with. Normally quiet with an air of elegance about him, he can be rude and arrogant, and likes to look down on people he deems “beneath” him (such as Allen, who is cursed). He is polite when necessary, but can also have a caustic and crude tongue. It seems that the only known friends of Kanda are Rabi and Linali (and even then he can be aloof), although he has, over time, learned a grudging respect for Allen. He believes in keeping promises, and strongly believes in protecting what is 'important' and 'worthwhile', but what he deems 'important' and 'worthwhile' are anyone's guess.
Kanda can be hard to understand. On one hand, he won't hesitate to insult you, and swear that he won't help you out if you're in trouble. On the other, he won't hesitate to take a blow for you, or ask what's wrong (albeit he does so in a distant manner). He has an inherent ability to sense danger, and has an uncanny gift of knowing people's thoughts and motivations. When engaged in battle, he will always analyze everything that's going on so he's prepared. To him, it's best to be logical about things... Although it is rumored that he's horrible with math, and is not particularly intelligent when it comes to the things you should learn in school.
There is a lot of mystery surrounding Kanda, in particular, a tattoo on his chest that lies directly above his heart. It is tied to his ability to heal at incredible speeds, no matter how serious his injuries, as well as his remaining lifespan. The reverse novel revealed that Kanda has a lotus flower in his room, sealed in an hour glass. Somehow, this flower is tied to his life because when the flower starts to wither, it means that he’s run out of time (he will die). The flower has dropped two petals, but it is otherwise in full bloom. It is also implied that Kanda wishes the flower would wither (i.e. he will run out of life and die) but not before he finds this mysterious person he’s been searching for. Whatever the case, he sure as hell can't search for this person until he gets out of Landels, a mental institution where they're trying to convince him he's someone else, and from someplace other than his world. His mission: to get himself and the other exorcists back to where they belong... Things at Landel's are dangerous... No more than his normal job, but at least at Headquarters, Kanda can have his soba.
